Melinda Benson, mezzo-soprano is a graduate of the University of Iowa, where she received her DMA in Voice Performance and Pedagogy in 2012 and her MA in 2005. A New York state native, she received her BA from SUNY Potsdam, Crane School of Music. Melinda is an active performer in the US. She has performed with the Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Singers and with opera companies in NJ, MD, DE and PA. Recent performance credits include: Emilia in Otello and Countes Ceprano/Giovanna in Rigoletto with Opera Seabrook, Celia in Iolanthe and Pitti-Sing in The Mikado with the Ardensingers of Delaware, Gertrude in Hansel and Gretel with Delaware Valley Opera Company, Lola in Cavalleria Rusticana with Concert Opera Philadelphia and Isabella in L’Italiana in Algeri with Center Stage Opera. In 2010, she was awarded the second place cash prize in the artist competition with the Austrian-American Society of Delaware. In 2013-14, she was awarded two grants through the Delaware Division of the Arts to further her research in voice pedagogy and to attend the National Association of Teachers of Singing conference.
Melinda is passionate about education through music and is currently compiling a lecture recital to perform at local colleges and schools. She is also preparing a cabaret recital as part of an upcoming artists series.
